A leadership journey

Volunteer mentors standing in a circle putting their hands in the middle for a spirit break

They said, “If you think you’re a leader, please stand up.”

Now, many arose but to my seat I was stuck

Because I couldn’t see what the others believed.

Me? Oh, please. Who could I ever lead?

From the networking to project managing, social action to group discussion –

all these fancy words were flying about, in school and out…

My mind was spiralling out but I couldn’t…give…in.

Of course I couldn’t give in.

This role was made for me: helping people, helping children be all they could be.

There was one boy. Child ‘B’, he really meant so much to me.

His growth I thought I’d never see.

Lost in the system was all he’d ever been.

But for me, I saw the smile on his face when I gave him the appreciation that he craved.

I savoured that memory; the feeling of felicity mixed with humility – I felt like a proud mum.

And I thought that I could see his final form; the boy that he’d become…

And now? I dare someone to ask that same question once again.

You see, a leader doesn’t need to be some crazy dictator.

Once you care enough about something or someone, and you strive to make that change –

that’s it. It’s done.

You are a leader.

I am a leader
